Palekh style lacquer box "Troika"

When Imperial Russia collapsed and Soviet Union started, Russian Icon makers suddenly found themselves without work. They found a way for making living by painting papier-mache decorative boxes also known as lacquer boxes. Usually those boxes represent a part of famous Russian farytales. Palekh style boxes are made by pressed paper instead of papier-mache and they are produced in other parts of Russia not Palekh region.

Palekh is a village in the Ivanovo Oblast, Central Russia.
